Charles Krauthammer slammed President Obama's press conference on the fiscal cliff Monday, saying he "places himself hovering benignly at an Olympian level above the fray where the children are playing in the sandbox." He continued to blast the president for acting as if he "just arrived in Washington on a tourist visa." Krauthammer criticized the tone of Obama's presser, saying that he spoke with "incredible arrogance" at a "crucial moment in very delicate negotiations": "He ridicules the Congress,he spikes the football on the Republicans, he rubs in the fact that they were resisting a raise in rates and that he made them do it." Then, Krauthammer says, insult was added to injury as Obama went into detail. "He basically says, 'I'm giving the Republicans zero on spending. And I mean zero. Not even in discretionary spending.' This is after he killed a proposal from the minority leader in the Senate." According to Krauthammer, Obama inappropriately implied that he "shoved all this down" Republican throats and went on to underscore that there would be no spending cuts later. "He laid out a radically oppositionist position, gleefully," Krauthammer said. "I think he wants to go over the cliff, and dare the Republicans to take the blame."
"A group of four United States Army soldiers who stand accused of killing a former brother-in-arms and his girlfriend committed the crime to keep their secret militia group under wraps, prosecutors in a Georgia court said on Monday. The soldiers, who are all stationed at Georgia's Fort Stewart, are all members of FEAR—Forever Enduring Always Ready—an armed group with ambitions that plotted domestic terror attacks and stockpiled weapons as part of an elaborate scheme to overthrow the government, prosecutors said. One of the Fort Stewart soldiers, Pfc. Michael Burnett, pled guilty to manslaughter and illegal gang activity on Monday, and testified as to the nature and aims of the plot. The rest of us are still skeptical of him and what he did when he was still in the Bush White House. And the press is trying to be tough on him specifically because he called them out for not being tough enough when he was press secretary. So, we have this ironic situation that in a time when McClellan is finally being honest, he has no defenders. I'm afraid this is going to lead the public to the false impression that the world is united in thinking he is a calculating opportunist who is trying to make a buck by turning on his friends. When, in fact, the reality is that the man finally grew a conscience. Throughout the book and his interviews, McClellan talks about how he grew uneasy throughout his time with Bush and finally his conscience got the better of him. I believe him. Why? Would it have been better if he dramatically stepped to the podium one day while he was still White House press secretary and said, "We have been doing an organized propaganda campaign to deceive the American people and I resign!"?
